Car Tyre Sizes
There are two ways to find this out:
Check your tyres that you have fitted
Check the tyre placard on your car.
Checking the tyre size from the tyres you've already fitted is done by looking for a set of numbers on the side wall of the tyre. You should see something that looks like this, e.g.: 225/45R17 91Y.
Checking the tyre size by the tyre placard. This is usually located on the 1CB 1D pillar on the drivers side door.
What do all these numbers mean?
On the tyre the numbers make reference to the width, height, size of the wheel, the maximum speed the tyre can handle and the maximum weight it can carry at the maximum speed.
Width: this is a measurement in millimeters (as per the above tyre) it is 225mm wide.
Height: this is a percentage of the width of the tyre, refereed to as the aspect ratio. The above example has an aspect ratio of 45, this means that the height of the tyre is 45% of the width of the tyre.
Diameter: This is the size of wheel that the tyre is designed to fit on. It is an imperial measurement and thus refers to the old school measurement of inches - the tyre in above example is made to fit a 17 inch wheel.
How come the tyre placard has other tyre sizes on it?
This is because the manufacturer of the car may have other options available for this car. It may have a sports option or a touring type tyre option.
What is the Load rating and Speed rating?
These are, if your like the legal requirements for the tyres fitted to your car. The manufacturer of the the car sets this NOT the manufacturer of the tyres. So a tyre that has a load rating of 1C91 1D and a speed rating of 1CY 1D means that this particular tyre is designed to carry a maximum load of 91=615Kg and carry it at a speed of 1CY 1D=300km/h.
